The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, carrying I-278 between Staten Island and Brooklyn, was officially opened to traffic. At the time, that link in the Interstate System was the world's longest suspension bridge. The bridge's second six-lane deck, located below the original one, was opened about four-and-a-half years later (see June 28).
